Backup dumps of your wiki here[edit]

I saw your discussion with the ShoutWiki folks about getting offline backups of your wiki. I understand that on a wiki you do this by getting a database dump. From the discussion it sounded as if the only way to do this was to ask them each time you wanted to do so, but maybe I missed something. What is the state of play with backup dumps?

(Background: I am thinking of starting a wiki and, like you, wouldn't like to see all my, and potentially other folks', contributions go south if shoutwiki turned toes-up.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talkcontribs) 16:44, 25 February 2016

I ask the staff once a year for a full database dump. Another way is to add a category to all the pages you want to backup more often. Maybe call it the "Export" category. And then use Special:Export to backup all the pages in that category. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Is the format in which data is saved from a database dump different to the format using Special:Export? — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talkcontribs) 23:24, 25 February 2016‎
Both use the .xml extension. Please sign your posts. :) It is the squiggly line icon in the edit toolbar.
See: Special:SpecialPages. Note the "Import pages" link: Special:Import. The "choose file" link there is for pulling up a .xml file. Shoutwiki has been stable for years now. It has not lost anything in years. It may have its share of downtime, but its backups have been secure for years. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:03, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi - and asking for administration[edit]

I already presume that you are an admin here. You also created this wiki via ShoutWiki! I'm interested in doing some anti-vandalism and patrolling work around here. I'd love to give you a helping hand as an admin, this is a made encyclopedia, not a playground for vandals. I'd love to be part of your admin team if it is okay with you. Cheers! Dovesmith123 (talk) 04:02, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for offering to help with vandalism. But it is not a problem anymore on this wiki. Special:AbuseFilter is taking care of it. --Timeshifter (talk) 10:30, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Yes, but still. My main goal here is to be an admin, so I can help patrol the site for any vandalism. The abuse filter isn't always active, so I can sneak in there before it blocks someone. Could you at least change my user rights to administrator? Plus, I;d love to feel the power to block a disruptive user. Dovesmith123 (talk) 18:07, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
I just had a crash course on the abuse filter from User:Saftzie. See our discussions on his talk page. As far as I can tell the abuse filter is always active. Of course the spammers may figure out other ways to get around it, but if that happens I will put up a new abuse filter fast. I want to do that myself since mistakes can scare off legitimate contributors.
The way wikis are set up, administrators can do a lot of damage. That is why I worked with one of the Shoutwiki staff to set up a special restricted administrator user right. See:

Do you want that user right? I could really use some help with that 2019 page. For example; the US and Canada sections have links to compilations of cities with events. Mostly 420 events. I need the cities to be listed separately along with the event links. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:07, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Of course! I want to be part of your team. I love to do some maintence work and remove vandalism here. Dovesmith123 (talk) 01:33, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
I added your user name to the list of 2019 page editors:
Template:2019 page editors
Please do not change the format of the 2019 page. Feel free to add cities and event links. I will tidy up, so don't worry about perfection. I know there are more 2019 cities in Germany right now, but I haven't gotten around to adding them. I am sure there are many more cities that could be added now and in the next few weeks. Feel free to do so. And thanks in advance.
If you have a Facebook page you want to share publicly on that list, let me know. My Facebook page listed there uses an alias name. --Timeshifter (talk) 03:35, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

About the removal of header spaces[edit]

Sorry! It was part of a tidy clean up. I also like doing maintence tasks too. Is there any pages that needs cleaning or improving on? As you can see, I can't really stand with the headers equals spaced from the title header. Plus, I don't like how it leaves a space below the headers, either. In future, I won't remove any templates. Next time, I will inform you before doing so. Again, sorry! Dovesmith123 (talk) 01:33, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
Please do not remove the header spaces. I kind of like them. They make it easier for me to scan wikitext. --Timeshifter (talk) 03:33, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
Okay! What do you want me to do then? Dovesmith123 (talk) 03:42, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
Check out the talk section above this one. I replied there also. --Timeshifter (talk) 03:47, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
