Drugs involved in U.S. overdose deaths, 2000 to 2016. Drug overdoses killed roughly 64,000 people in the United States in 2016. 52,404 in 2015. In comparison yearly U.S. HIV deaths peaked at roughly 51,000 deaths in 1995.
